First Aid at Work

Accidents and illnesses happen every day. Some people need only a helping hand while others may suffer serious permanent injuries without help. By mastering Emergency First Response Primary Care (CPR) and Secondary Care (first aid) course skills you can render important care to those in need.

You'll also know that you're learning state of the art skills, based on the consensus view of the Basic Life Support (BLS) Working Group of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). In addition, the program is based on established instructional design and educational protocols to render an educationally valid and credible product. Emergency First Response courses also meet CPR requirements for participants seeking certification through the American Council on Exercise.

Primary Care (CPR)

Emergency First Response Primary Care (CPR) teaches you how to deal with emergencies that are immediately life threatening.. You will focus on primary care through a combination of knowledge development, skill development and realistic scenario practice to make sure you have the knowledge, understanding and confidence to use your skills. Here are the Primary Care (CPR) skills:

  • Scene Assessment
  • Barrier Use
  • Primary Assessment
  • Rescue Breathing
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Serious bleeding management
  • Shock management
  • Spinal injury management

You may also participate in an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training component, learn how to help a conscious choking adult and have an emergency oxygen use orientation.

Secondary Care (first aid)

Secondary Care (first aid) covers injuries or illnesses that are not immediately life threatening or when local EMS is unavailable or delayed. You focus on secondary assessment and first aid through knowledge development, skill development and realistic scenario practice. The Secondary Care (first aid) skills are:

  • Injury Assessment
  • Illness Assessment
  • Bandaging
  • Splinting for Dislocations and Fractures
  • Choking

Children First Aid course

A Child falls off the top of the slide. Your niece chokes on a hot dog at a family picnic. Your little brother twists his ankle on his skateboard. How can you help?

The Emergency First Response Care for Children course teaches you how to deal with the life threatening and non-life threatening medical emergencies for infants and young children. The course offers a flexible learning method to meet your lifestyle needs and practical hands on training sessions with a qualified instructor to build your confidence. Its broken into Primary and secondary care elements.

AED Course

This course will review the use of CPR on adults and then look at the use of defibrillators for the lay-person. Participants will look at different heart rthymes and why defibrillators can't be used in all situations, without the intervention of advanced life support.

On completion of this course participants will be able to demonstrate how to:

  • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on a mannequin according to the machines guidelines.
  • Place AED pads on a patient with no signs of circulation
  • Assist a patient who has been successfully defibrillated with an AED

Oxygen First Aid Course

This course reviews the use of CPR and resuscitation on adults. Participants will then look at providing oxygen therapy to casualties discussing the advantages and disadvantages.

On completion of this course participants will be able to demonstrate how to:

  • Identify when a casualty would benefit from oxygen therapy
  • Operate a O2 cylinder in daylight and darkness
  • Correctly identify the correct mask and setting based on patient assessment
  • How to give resuscitation to a non breathing casualty whilst receiving oxygen via a mask
